Does a Shared IP address hurt website indexing?

Hello everyone:

I have read bits and pieces about the importance of choosing a reliable web host, what I want to know more about is how do search engines relate to web hosts when they index sites. For instance, I have a robots.txt file, meta tags, adsense, keywords, sufficient content, etc., yet even with traffic going to the site, the indexing is pathetic. I am getting more than a little frustrated after tweaking countless times with no visible improvement.

What guidelines do you use to find out which webhost is best in relation to search engines? How do you find out how many "hops" from the Internet backbone the host is located? Does a redirect cause a problem? Is a dedicated IP the solution? Is there a meta tag beside the ROBOTS, FOLLOW, INDEX and GOOGLEBOT tagS that can help my site be indexed better?

Can someone PLEASE recommend a GREAT webhost for streaming media business that will not cost a fortune?

I welcome all suggestions and I thank you for your assistance.
