Adding live broadcasts and videos to a website.

Where do I start?

Hello,
I am very new to web developing. I have developed websites writing html
and css in notepad. My understanding of scripting is limited.
My experience is growing by developing sites for people I know for free.
One of them really challenged me. He wants a website where he can do live broadcasts and can have archived videos for those who subscribe to these features.
I know this is way advanced for me but I would like some ideas on where to start and what software I am going to need?

Thank you! Any guidance is greatly appreciated.
D

Welcome to WebmasterWorld ddrej.

If you don't have much background then it might be best to use a CMS for that. Many open source packages will integrate video, image and upload modules. In a case like yours it would probably be best to use a pre-built system and tweak it to work the way you like rather than building out the technology from scratch.

I'm partial to Drupal. They have a video module that works just fine with uploading videos or using videos from services like YouTube or Google Video.

Another idea might be to look at the Gallery system. You can run that as a stand-alone CMS or integrate it with the portal CMS of your liking.
