I am pretty new to all of this, I have just created my web site and am now trying to generate traffic. I heard that you need to create a sitemap.xml to submit to google. I have now created one but what do I do with it now? how do I submit this file to google?

i'm sure you'll find this in the google doc, but you keep your sitemap.xml file in the root directory.

Upload your site map to your root directory like such:
www.mysite.com/sitemap.xml

Log into Google Webmaster Tools.
Click on the sitemaps tab.
Click add a Sitemap.
Choose general Sitemap.
Enter the URL where your site is (ie: www.mysite.com/sitemap.xml)
Click add web sitemap.

.. Sorted ..

you do NOT have to link to the sitemap.xml from your index page.
