Getting My Site Listed

How do I get my site in the listings?

Hello,
because I'm just publishing my first site I am very unaware of how to get it found?
I have submitted it to Google and Yahoo but it seems it could take some time for them to recognise it. Is there another way to get it on the listings. I'm aware that the more symantically correct the code is, the easier it will be for the spiders to pick it up but I've covered all of that.
Is it worth submitting it to any other search engines?

Please help

Regards

Erdy.

The best way is to get incoming links; eg from quality directories. Then the SEs will find your site and list it (eventually). No need to submit to SEs; use that time submitting to directories.

Do read around here; A lot of the basic stuff has been asked before ;)

Do you get good results from the free directorys?
Only, i'm doing this site at cost (for experience) and the guy probably won't want to pay any fees?

Sorry SK11, do you mean the directories you pay for are the fastest?
If so how long in general could it take to get my listing up to a reasonable level using the free directories?
I know thats a very general question, but I suppose what I mean is it a waste of time using the freebies, especially if I was going to get paid for a site?

You are changing the question! :)

Free directories - quality ones - will get your site listed by the SEs (your original question); getting to a 'reasonable level' is a very different ball game, and will depend much on your niche, your rivals and your content; plus any number of SEO issues.

Read around here for all sorts of tips; links from free quality directories are a good, if not essential, start - but to do well, directories form just one part of a balanced SEO diet.
