Hello, I am a complete newbie who doesn't even have a website yet. I am planning on building a link site. It will be on a specific topic, and after I learn more I will be building at least two more link sites on other topics. Eventually I will want to sell advertising space but I want to concentrate on building a quality site first. I have been looking at webhost review sites, and figure if I pick one with a "10" rating I should be OK. I don't need much space to start with, but I want plenty of room to grow and expand. Can I start off "too big". If I can have 1200MB disk space with 50GB data transfer for about the same money as 25MB disk space and 2GB data transfer shouldn't I do that? Are there disadvantages to that, i.e. overwhlming myself, etc? Thanks in advance for any input.

You cannot start off too big. If you start small, you can have difficulties expanding. Try to envisage what your requirements will be in two years, and aim for a solution that will cater for that straight away.

If you require server-side processing (CGI for example) I should always recommend getting a dedicated server. But if you will just be serving static pages, shared hosting should suffice.

What do you mean by a "link" site? Are you trying to build link-farms?

Search engines don't seem too terribly friendly to that sort of site any more, and one wonders how much advertising revenue one could obtain with an outdated style like that...?

Just my opinion, of course; I could be wrong....

Thanks Matt

stapel, by “link site” I mean a site where I put links that I find appropriate for the site, after checking with that sites webmaster of course. Ad revenue is not a priority as the site will deal with a field that I volunteer in.
