What is livebot-65-55-212-18.search.live.com?

Is this a Bad Bot?

Step-by-step, and with a wink, what would I do on my website to keep this off?

Previously had Russian Bad Bot, via NJ, harvest my site; following by oodles of bounceback emails to non-existent website email accounts [soon to be STOPPED by my server].

search.live.com is MSN, and the user-agent string should be one of the "msnbot" variants.

So do you really want to ban MSN? Do you already exclude it from parts of your site using a robots.txt file?

I think this MSN weblog article [blogs.msdn.com] may answer your questions. If the IP in the user-agent string (namely, 65.55.212.18) matches the IP in your logfiles, then MSN ("Microsoft Corp") would appear to have been spidering your pages.

I could be wrong, of course....

Thank you Jim and Eliz -

A little piece of info here and another there - when will my computer education come together? Giggles.

Thanks, I'll follow from this.
