I have tinkered a bit with personal sites for a few yrs, and recently set up a homeschool resource site that I hope to make some pocket change from adsense and affiliates eventually.
My mother, who is head of the county recreation commitee, asked me if I could hook them up with a website because she likes mine. Mine is html, but I really think they need a CMS to meet their needs (and the stuff I wanna give them that they would find helpful-and I could show off--and maybe get more work).
So I put Drupal on my homeschool host to test it. I just picked up Drupal two days ago, and I gotta say, I'm impressed! I'm pretty retarded when it comes to getting stuff up and running on my server-and I'm still fighting with some stuff in wordpress. But I've got the Drupal mostly working-and have a bunch of intertwined modules installed and running. They want events, sign ups, volunteer sign ups, fundraising, cancellations feed and email, eng/spanish translation.....
The only problem I have so far, is that I don't have lock tables permission in mySQL( I understand that I'll have to ask my host about that-or use a linux machine and DIY), so I get a big block of errors on my test site.
So my list of stupid questions:
1. Is there any EASY way to get those error messages off Drupal, so that I can just leave it where it is to show them the site?
2. If there isn't will this work? Pay for a month of hosting with opensourcehost and put it there for the demo. The guy there said that I can set up the hosting plan and site on the ip address so that we can transferr a domain name in later, if they like it.
3. I figure that opensource host may be my best and easiest bet for hosting. I have noticed, and heard that they can be slow at times, but I don't think thats a big issue here-and I've heard that they're reliable. And I thought that would be a safe way to get a good idiot proof install of the Drupal to start with. Yes?
4. On that note--their lowest tier is 75 M storage with 1 database. Would that be enough for the website?
5. Any suggestions on the modules that would be good in the Drupal to do what I need? I grabbed all the Organic Groups stuff I could find.
6. Any theme suggestions for this kind of site?
7. Any suggestions on how to approach them about money? Its not like the whole committee came to me and asked, but she is the head. And how much, and how-with our construction business we break it up into 2 or 3 payments throughout or on a small job we take it all at the end. I desperately need the cash ASAP, and this is my 1st project for someone else. I figure that if it were a normal situation, it would be worth about $300-500? And the commitee only meets once a month, so if I can't get something approved as far as payment on Tuesday nite, It will have to wait til next month-but the more I can get, the better Xmas will be.
Thanks A Bunch!
Danielle
2. IŽm with opensourcehost myself, you can set it up there and have them set the CMS up with the appropriate modules and templates (youŽll have to select those first though from the descriptions on the drupal site > download).
3. Absolutely, see 2 above, the perk with OSH is excellent service, more often than not its the company founder Scott that answers your emails.
4. More than enough for the project you describe.
5. IŽm a relative drupal newbie myself but the drupal forum would be a good place to ask.
6. This one you really must decide on your own.
7. Have your mother sign up with her credit card at OSH, let them do all the work (after you have found out what templates and modules youŽll use) and then your mother can hand over a receit for the hosting fees plus your workbill at the committe meeting.
