I am pretty proficient at HTML/XHTML etc, and am looking to start learning a server side language. My question is, as a newbie programmer, which language would be best to start with : Perl or PHP?

I am somewhat familiar with PHP, and only slightly with Perl, but I would like to hear your opinions on which one is best for a beginner to learn.

Thanks!

I prefer PHP. It's pretty simple to learn, especially if you know some of it already, as in your case. Plus its documentation [us2.php.net] is very helpful.

Hope to see you around the PHP Forum ;)

Thanks for the reply.....

I've been doing a CBT for PHP, and purchased some reference material on it. I just want to get an idea if I should start with PHP or not. I just didn't know if it would be more advantageous learning one language over the other first!

Thanks,again!

PHP is the 'in' thing now, but Perl has been blazing for quite some time! Both can accomplish the saame tasks, used properly.

Chose what you can work with best and run with it.
