change .htaccess

how do i do this?

I'm changing my site over to run on wordpress. I read that i can edit my .htaccess file to redirect from my old pages to the new ones to avoid loosing my backlinks. Where do I start? How do i even see what is in the file let alone edit it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
