I'm a newbie so please excuse this naive question. I hired a company to create a web-based software program which I plan to sell to a targeted market segment. This program will run on the customer's private server or web-host for their companies' website. Since I'm very familiar with the needs of particular market, I thought that I can make some money. Yet, I've never sold software and know nothing about the technical side of it all.
I plan on uploading the program directly to the customer's server through their protocol. I will not be giving them a disk of the program. Very simply, I don't want to have disks out there which can be copied, traded, or sold on eBay.
But, I'm wondering if the progam can be downloaded from their website by someone within the customer's organization who has access to the protocol. If so, is there anyway to prevent that from happening?
I spent my nest egg on this project and I can't afford for it to be ripped off. I appreciate any feedback. Thanks!
Like I said, I don't know much about the market but I'm almost positive that what I said above is true. If it is copyrighted, it can still be copied. But you can take legal action if you find out that it is. There are other laws about this and I'm not getting into to much detail(afraid that I don't know every detail on those laws). Just make sure you do your homework before attempting to sell, otherwise you may find yourself getting the short end of the stick.
edit: I would like to add this. Whats to stop the person that is designing it for you from giving it to someone else and they copy it. Just giving you something to take into consideration.
