Search Engine Optimization for Dummies by Peter Kent worked pretty well for me when I got started.

The forum is clearly the up to the minute source. But some of us need a big picture map to get started. I have ordered the Dummies book.

Another vote for SEO for Dummies, although you could probably learn just as much right here at Webmaster World.

Actually I expect to learn a lot more from the Webmaster World site than I will from any book. I find that a book can give you an overview and a quick start. I also find that a good book gives the beginner a "lookup" capability that's quicker and clearer than searching the various posts.

I do expect to outgrow the book. A good forum should always be ahead of a book at least from the day after it the book is published.
