Hi guys.

I am sure this was addressed many times, so references will be also appreciated. Direct answer are always welcome of course...

I have an idea for a website, which requires some basic wiring such as use accounts (login), sending emails and letting the users post data items etc'. It is community driven (brings value to a community of people), just like this forum does (but it is not a forum site). However, I want it to be at least self sustained so I don't have to fork money out of my own day job to keep it up.

Can anyone help me with formulas or just anecdotal examples of how much does it cost to run a site? and what are the median revenues I can expect? I know it is VEWRY general, but help me out here. here are some specs:
I will use words such as "post" for simplicity, cause everyone understand forums, but it is not exactly what I have in mind. but in scales in the same way...

*I will need a database, it will hold users, but also something like "post" or "transactions" history
*I will send emails when new posts are replies
*I will track a "balance" or "score" for each user
*I will most likely use asp.net

--How does the cost scale with the number of users? I know that bandwidth is an issue, I will pay more the more users I have
--how much will space cost me? the DB for 10K users might start being big
--after I understand the cost, do I have a chance of covering it up with adSense or any other program?

Remember, this is not a static webpage like CNN, it is more like craigslist or a forum (but not a forum and not craigslist (-: )

thanks!
