How do I resolve HTTP 500 errors on my Web server?

When I check my Web server logs I sometimes find a 500 error. How do I resolve HTTP 500 errors on my Web server?

Hi,

A 500 Server Error can be caused by alot of things, there a probably errors in your configuration, this could be the main config or .htaccess files (i'm assuming your running Apache) your error logs should give you more information.

You really need to look further into the source of the error. Once you know exactly what is causing the errors, you can begin to resolve the issue.

Excuse me, but I am fairly new at this. I've checked my logs but I guess I don't know what to look for.

By the way, I'm running IIS 5.0.

If you're using Internet Explorer, it shows a generic error message for 500 errors by default.

If you go Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab and uncheck the "Show friendly HTTP error messages" option, and then navigate to the page causing the problem, you should a get a more detailed explanation of what may be causing the issue.
