How to create a search engine with ready-to-use criterias?

and how to create the database to allow that?

Hello eveybody,

I want to create a search tool on a database i'm going to build. I want it to be guided which means there will be 4 boxes representing 4 categories. And each category will include a list of selected criterias.
For example, the first box could be music and when you click on it, you'll this kind of list : rock / jazz / blues / urban / etc...
As i'm quite new to those things, i have no idea where to look to get help on how to build both the serach tool and the database!
any help is more than welcome...
