I have to install SSl certificate to the website of my firend.
The problem is that I am new to this area and will appreciate it very much if some can explain me step by step how to do it.
I have a clue what to do but I am not sure.
1) Login to CPanel of the website, then go to SSL manager and then there generate KEY and CSR.
2) How do I create a certificate from the key and csr, do I have to buy certificate from somewhere?
3) Do I install the certificate from the Cerificates in the SSL Manager in the CPanel?
Can you please explain me everything step by step because I want to help my friend :(
Best Regards, Ani
You will need to send your CSR to a third party who will generate the certificate for you (the file will probably have a .CRT extension). This then needs to be installed on your webserver. It sounds like Cpanel probably does this for you. So all you need to do is find a company that will generate the certificate file for you. There's a gazillion of them on the web, google for it.
(Technically you can generate your own certificate. However most browsers have a list of sites that they 'trust' embedded in them and if the certificate isn't signed by someone associated with that list then the visitors browser will pop up an error. This doesn't really provide any more technical security than signing your own certificate so I think it's a bit of a sham. But there you go....the short answer is you have to buy a certificate somewhere).
