Best link structure and file extension

I am trying to decide which link structure to use on my site and with modrewrite I can make it anything.

For instance would I be best to have every single page of the site be domain.com/widgets format or is there ever a good reason to have subdirectories in the url? Also would it be better to have the links end in an extension like .html or .asp versus nothing at all?

What I would tend to do is make sure you use a format that is being used my external sites that link to you. It's always good to remain consistaint, even when it comes to internal links.
