How to convert log files?

I posted a question in another forum but decided that I should post it here since I'm still new to all this.

My site is on an Apache server. My log files are set up to rotate 5 and zip up once the file reaches 1mg. Can someone explain this? Specifically how can I save my logs before I lose anymore information! There are 5 zipped files - which one is the oldest?

What do most people do as far as analysis? I have FastStats look at the logs on the server. Should I download them locally? How? How often?

Also, is there a way I can exclude the images from tracking (as far as downloaded logs?) I already have a filter on my reports for this.

although I am NO expert on analysing log files, last few months have been a learning curve with 95% of knowledge gained from reading the Tracking and Logging Forum:

I have a host who use to zip files at a given size too. I download them all locally and open the smallest one. When they unzip, it's all in one file. I has been chuncked on compression. Maybe the case for you too.

Alternatively, you could look at the dates of hits in files. You could store them in individual folders called by dates or paste the whole in a single file.

<sidenote>1 meg seems incredibily small. Could you ask the host to zip them once a month instead?
