Replacing the www with a keyword or region id

Does replacing the www with a keyword/region id help?

I want to know whether it is better to:

Put a keyword in the place of the www

or

At the end of the domain after the .com/

or

www.keyword.domainname dot com

And if I am an international company with a .com domain hosted in the US:

Will replacing the www with my region ID assist my listings on my local Google?
For example:

de.domainname dot com
fr.domainname dot com

I've seen no significant difference between subdomain and directory.

Localization to nation is likely more influenced by IP address for hosting + CC TLD, plus consideration of the localization of IBLs (and other factors).

A CC is a country code like .uk
tld is a top level domain .com .net .org etc.

IBL is an in-bound link.
