sitemap.gz - Is this correct?

I've been reading about Google listings and the importance having a sitemap file on the server. Is the following correct for my website - it's a very simple site? I've saved it to a file called sitemap.gz

Assuming that it is in order do I now simply up-load it to the public-html directory of my server and then submit it to Google?

I've saved it to a file called sitemap.gz

The ".gz" normally indicates a zipped file (to save space) in Linux. I personally would call the file sitemap.xml and then put it in the root directory of your website, let Google know and then sit back and wait for it to be read.
