I was wondering about reseller web hosting. In particular, what should I be expecting to pay? I currently manage 3 websites (I know, I know, it isn't much right now but it's a start!) and would like to offer to host these sites myself instead of having the businesses pay someone else to host their sites when these other people are doing nothing.
Technologies currently being used by these sites include: php, javascript, mySQL, and I'm currently planning on setting up a shopping cart for one of these sites. They are all currently being hosted on Linux servers.
Any advice on where to start?
Thanks
I recently bought my own reseller. I had rather more sites than you but it has turned into a very valuable investment. The low hosting fee I charge all my clients more than pays for the monthly reseller fee. But I waited till I had a steady stream of clients before making the jump to hosting.
Resellers costs around £25 per month and upwards of £100
Some things that you might consider before you make the jump:
Do you have the funds to pay for reselling?
Do you have the time for the responsibility that comes with hosting as well as designing sites?
Do you have disaster plan if your host loses it's business?
Those are definately things I've been considering. Right now the three sites I've been managing are paying $28/month Canadian each for hosting. I do not think the business owners of these sites realize that they could get hosting which fits their needs MUCH cheaper. I pay $7 a month for linux hosting which includes all of the development technologies I need for building and maintaining a website.
Can I ask you roughly how many sites you manage to have just become a reseller? It seems to me that someone in this business would either have to be constantly designing sites and/or be supplying hosting and site management to many businesses to be profitable. What do you think?
Thanks again.
I have a couple of dozen sites. Some of these I host free (friends, family and my own) and others I charge a monthly/quartly fee. I deided that 10 was the minimum number of paying customers I would need to make it worthwhile/safe investment. I also manage most of my domains though the same cpanel which is handy.
I pay a monthly fee of £30 to my host and resell for £5 £10 and £20 month (depends of size/type of hosting plan). As you can imagine the reseller soon pays for itself and my customers are happier because they get so much for their money (word of mouth is great!).
It's fun, and it'll earn pretty good money at any level because the overheads are so small. Buy em' high and sell them cheap! :)
Maybe I'll also set a goal for paying sites to manage before I start this reseller thing. Decisions, decisions.
Thanks for your help. It is much appreciated.
