Im Starting a new E-Retail and need some help.

I am having someone develope the web site. Most of the products will be dropped shipped so my focus will be to try and develope and maintain a site the ranks very high in search engines. I am a completely new to this so any ideas (Do's and Dont's) that should be incorporated into the design and sight. I guess how the question is how do I rank high and stay their on GOOG and Yahoo.
