I just started my first website to sell a product that I make. I used one of the free webhosting companies to build my website and I selected a domain name that I now beleive was a mistake. The domain name I selected states our company name which doesn't include the name of the item we make. When doing a search on Google I have to type in the company name in order to bring up our website rather than being able to type in the name of the item that we make to bring up our website.
I though about using one of the redirect services so I could select a new domain name which includes the name of the item we make, then submitting it to the search engines in hopes that a search for our specific item would bring up our website.
Would this be the right thing to do, or perhaps the search engines frown on this? What options if any do I have?
This is quite a learning experience for me, I've surfed the net for a few years now but I've never been on this side of the fence. Please bear with me.
Thanks
Regards,
Doug
I wouldn't recommend changing from your company name to what is called a "keyword" domain (ie. a domain with your primary keyword in it). The advantage you have with using your company name is one of branding - a successful site builds its brand as much as anything. That's why you go to Google.com, not search-engine.com :)
Search engine submission is outdated and pretty useless these days: the fact that the Seach Engine Submission forum here at WebmasterWorld is now closed is a good indicator as to how important it is! The keys to good ranking, admittedly amongst many other factors, are good content and good links. As a good starter guide, try this thread:
It is several years old now, but very little of the basics have changed in that time. You should also check out the links in the WebmasterWorld welcome thread [webmasterworld.com]. Good luck!
