I’m new to web development. I would like to start community web site. In this case it seems that portal development software like PHP-NUKE,XOOPS, MAMBO or something similar is the simplest way to do this. What I would like to implement is news, divided in some categories with ability for users to add their own, forum, some kind of classified, articles divided by categories.
What CMS engine seems to be the best from the following points of view :
1.Good support and big choice of modules.
2.Speed of operation.
3.Simplicity of use, customization and administration.
4.Seems to be mostly stable.
Thank you.

Mambo seams to be pretty much up to the task you have in mind. Not all of the features you require will be availaile as standard, although there are loads of modules for features such as forums, classifieds etc.

You might want to have a look through opensourcecms.com also. They have a very wide range of cms solutios that you can try out on their servers.

One that has always appealed to me is phpwebsite - open source, developed and used by Appalachian State University

[phpwebsite.appstate.edu...]

It's got everything imaginable available, it just takes a backend developer to customize it and get it search engine friendly. IMO it's just gorgeous, I wish I had a use for it and could do the tech stuff for it myself for personal use.

Just ran across xdbcms - it is still beta but runs on LAMP and generates static HTML pages for any type of site. Its got a lot of potential, but very usable as a beta even.
