link different domains that are from one server/host

hey all:) i am new to SEO and i wanted to ask i have a website and the provider host will let me register like 5 new domains with a small extra monthly charge, i thought since link popularity is important for higher ranking, is it okay to link different domains with the same subject matter to my main site or each other? or would the search engines consider it spamming because they all from the same web hosting provider source?

Hi animated, Welcome to WebmasterWorld.

The extra websites will help you out in terms of your link popuarity. But htis is something you need to work out very carefully. What you want to acheive is one site that receives links from all the others, but does not return th elink to the other sites.

It is also pretty importaint to make each site unique. You cant simply place a copy of your site on each. Unique content is the key here.

On each site you should work on getting as many inbound links as possible. The more inbound links (from sites you don't own) the better. The more links you can get pointing to each of your sites the more importaint each link will be when you link to your main site.

Great mack:D thanks for the fast reply to my first post here.Yes i knw that each domain has to have original content thats important thanks for the tip what made me thinking is that if lets say the google bots check the ip DNS of the domains and see its all the same source and would consider it spamming because even though they have original content each but they still from the same hosting site

Of course we're dealing with different SE's, each becomming more sophistcated as time passes. So what was true yesterday for one SE, may not hold true tommorow for another, etc.

It's not uncommon for webmasters to have large networks of sites channeling link pop and traffic to their main sites. In addition to IP's and shared content, Whois can be another indicator of how sites are related. So can linking patterns. More competitive industries may be held to higher standards. In general, I think most would agree that unless you go overboard, your site wouldn't incur penalties for what you propose, but the value of your inbound links may be discounted if they don't appear to be naturally occurring.

Do the search engines actually use the whois info? I'm making a site for one guy who has a main site and two others for the same thing, but the content is quite different. Then he got two other domain names for me to make him some one-page mini sites with a link to his main site, to boost link popularity. But... will search engines actually check whois to see if the same person owns the other domains?

Also, this guy also has another site I "temporarily" put up for him, that's a duplicate of another site. The original site has a zero link popularity, but the temporary site on another domain name (that was supposed to be only up during a period of radio ads he had going), seems to be picked up by search engines and doing better. So I don't really want to take the site down and just redirect the URL to the main site. What do you think?

Finally, how do you "quote" someone else's post here? Looks like a nifty little feature, do I just use some code for that? There's no "quote" button that I can see.
