Would you suggest getting a server through a hosting company or getting your own server?

Also, what hosting companies and stand alones would you recommend?

Use a hosting company. They have sensible connections to the Internet, which you can rent yourself but cost serious money!

Many hosting companies rent dedicated servers, they have racks of these in data centers all wired in, they are cheap and effective, and can be upgraded as required.

Personally, I use tera-byte in Canada for a dedicated server.
