PR--How do you make it higher?

I'm a little confused. I downloaded the Google toolbar, and have been using it to see PRs. (Mine's really low [2/10]) My question is, how do you make the PR of a site higher? I've read that it is something to do with links within your site, but can someone explain it further?

Is there a good resource for this?

Princess, mainly getting higher PageRank (PR) has to do with getting links from other sites.
The theory is if other important sites link to your site then your site is more important too.
So Google assigns a PR to each page it indexes, based on the links pointing to this page, wether it's links from within the site or from pages from other sites.
It's a system which basically is very easy, though the experts can get into heated discussions on the details.

Most important step however for you is to acquire links from pages with as high PR as possible.

Read the Google forum for all the info you will ever need!

Key points of importance:

1) lots of content
2) plenty of links from related sites
3) listings in the major directories, e.g. ODP and possibly Yahoo if you want to spend the money
4) make sure Google can see the whole of your site
5) link your deep pages back to your homepage

6) get your keyword text in the incoming links to your site, in the links back to your homepage, in the page content, in the title, in the URL, in the ALT text
7) don't be naughty - doorways, redirects, hidden text, 1x1 pixel gifs etc. etc. etc.

Also, remember that PageRank isn't everything! Concentrate on content, content and more content. People will link to you if there is something worth linking to. Hope this helps.

I have a question. I read that the deep pages should be indexed to the home page for internal links. I understand this. But how is the best way to link to it. Do I link with "index.html" or should I link it to my URL "www.myhomepage.com"?

So, are you saying to make every link to your index/default page within your site [yoursite.com?...]

I'd heard that using absolute (or is it relative?) links is bad, because if you change you domain name, then you have to go back and change every link...

I have a question about PR. Does the length of time your site has been on the web have anything to do with your PR (ie a site that has been on for 5 years compared to a site that has been on for 4 months). I know a site that has been on longer has more of a chance at obtaining backlinks but what if the sites have the same amount of backwardlinks. Also, my site is industry specific and all of my competitors have the same PR as my site does. Does this mean, I won't be able to get a higher PR? I've been working really hard at obtaining quality reciprical links and adding rich content to my site. Is this a waste of time if Google gives everyone in my industry the same PR?

I never knew this. If it set the links in my site for my main page to ¦http://www.mysite.xxx¦ will it really help? should I change my other links on my site like ../contact/ to ¦http://www.mysite.xxx/contact/¦ too?

From what I've heard in another thread, yes, they should be www.mysite.com and not index.html
