But I want to start doing some "unassigned homework".
I basically want to set up my other PC as a web server/https server.
As far as I know I can have both on the same machine(?)
I'd like to have an Apache server... I like their features. And I know that Apache can run on my machine.
And I've heard of Apachefriends and XAMPP.
So... that's the web server part...
As for the HTTPS part I've heard different things.
It seems like I need a site certificate to make an http into an https. Here's what I've read so far...
I'm just going to paste a few qoutes that I've seen on WW (I know there's a quote feature, but I haven't figured out how to use it so I'm just going to paste these in):

"...The file you generated is called a Certificate Signing Request (CSR). It will need to be provided to the certificate issuing authority along with the exact domain name you plan to secure, proof of ownership for the domain, and the articles of incorporation or DBA paperwork for the company owning the domain."
[comment: Geez.. sounds like a lot of work. Is that needed?]
Quinn said in reply to somebody:
"Many hosts sell certificates, and will install the cert for you. Really all you may have to do is fill out some paperwork and re-link your pages to account for the https:// "
[comment: Better I think. Install the cert... where? on my PC or their server? "Paperwork"? Maybe it's the same as what's mentioned above(?)]
jmbishop said in reply to somebody:
"Depending on your host they may have a wildcard SSL certificate that you can use. This would save you the hassle of having to obtain your own."
[comment: Wildcard sounds good. I just need to get the thing to work. Must a host provide them? I'm my own host. Are there any certificate mills out there?]

Their support area is good - led me by the hand through setting up SSL on Apache, and they have a guide for IIS as well."
[comment: I'll check it out. But if I'm required to go through that whole registration process mentioned in the first one just to get the hand-holding then forget it.]
Hardware details:
Client PC is:
Win98SE/Pentium 3/ Netscape 7.1
Server PC is:
WinXP Pro/ (2) 74.5 GB HD's
Dual 2.8 Ghz Xeon's
1.0 GB RAM
Some spec's on the motherboard box that I have no idea what they mean:
Intel 875P Chipset
Dual-Channel DDR 333
533 MHz FSB
Intel CSA Gigbit LAN
On board TI IEEE1394
They're both connected to my router. Router goes to cable modem. The router has a firewall, and the client has Blackice, the XP machine has the XP firewall app.
I'm not really worried about security. Nobody's going to know I've got this server. And if need be I'll yank the cable wire right out of the modem when I use the two machines.
And I don't need DNS. I'll just type the server's ip in the client's browser when I want to load a page.
So.. comments?
