Another dreaded frames question

I know they get bad press, but it's easiest for now. (I think.)

I recently volunteered to do a simple website for my church. I am (well, was) a very old-school programmer - learned COBOL and the like in the 70's, even to the point of being able to read Hollerith. I just mentioned that to give you an idea of my skill level. Anyway, I've not kept up with everything over the years, other than very basic HTML stuff.

I actually got the frames up and working, with one small glitch - when I load the initial page, Frame A loads twice. Frame B is fine, other than being a bit squashed. I can maneuver around the site using the links in Frame A just fine, but even using the link to go back to the initial page causes the same problem, even with reloads et al.

Can anyone offer a hint as to what this is? (I'm convinced it's something stupid that I just don't know about.) I'd also be interested in info on what exactly I could use other than frames to achieve the same static menu/various pages type of affect. Thanks in advance.

Just to clarify the problem, Linda, what does your frameset look like (e.g., vertical navbar on left, content on right)? And the problem is that the stuff in the content frame is distorted? Can you explain the appearance problem in a bit more detail? And is only the initial page affected?

It's not an answer to your question, but I thought I'd add that most designers have decided that the having constantly visible navigation options is no longer a big deal. Very few new sites feature frames.

Thanks Roger!

The frames are vertical. Frame A is on the left, 20% of the window. Frame B is on the right, 80%. Frame A contains a static menu which loads the various pages into Frame B.

When the index page loads, there are two Frame A's side-by-side and one Frame B. (When I mentioned in my original post that the stuff in Frame B was a bit squashed, I just meant that it was displayed in a much smaller frame than I'd intended.) The Frame A's each contain the correct information, there's just two of them. Frame B also contains the correct information. However, if you select any other page from the static menu, they load just fine - with one Frame A and one Frame B. However, if you select the Index page again, boom - back to two Frame A's.

I think that clarifies everything - thanks in advance!

Hi Linda....

I used to use that sort of setup on various sites. My "personal vanity home page" (um. That's a "thumbing my nose" reference at a PC Mag biggie a few years back....) is still set up that way because I've not the time to rework it. Please sticky me a link and I'll give it a look - might be able to help you....

LindaEB, check the URL of the page you are loading in the content frame. It sounds like you are loading the frameset page instead of just the content.
