image file types in htdocs

can anyone help?

i've got images in gif and jpeg format in my htdocs directory on the ftp server.

However, when I look at the page online, they have converted into bitmap and take ages to download.

Can anyone help this this?

Not sure if I fully understand your post, but (some versions of?) internet explorer won't let you save images from the web as jpg or gif, only bitmap.
