Fortunately this is a great place for you to start researching everything you will ever need to know.

Personally I don't bother submiting or paying for inclusion in the SEs. I have found that it is much more effective to work on links to your site. Spend some time going through the Link Development section of this forum to learn how.

You will find that keywords are not so much the 'in thing' anymore. Now it seems that it is more of a content and topic based game, if you spend some time reading the different sections here you will pick up on things pretty quickly.

Before you do anything though, read this [webmasterworld.com]

Judging from my recent experiences the best way to get search engines to crawl a new site is still to get a few decent quality incoming links.

Try the free submit options at the various engines if you want but they don't seem to be a very reliable way of getting crawled if you don't already have incoming links.

Most search enigines (including Google) have an add URL link, but I think A lot of us question this. I personaly belive you need at least one inbound link to get indexed.

I tend to ignore the search engines at first and concentrate all my efforts into building good quality inbound links, web directories and niche sites are a great place to start. You will then notice that as the sites that link to you get spidered, the crawler will follow links pointing to your site.

Getting indexed properly can take some time, but is very worth it long term.

There are loads of services out there offering "submit your site to ****xxxxx number of search engines with one click" I think you are safer to avoid these. Long term they may do you more harm than good. Some of these services are actualy in breach of search engine terms of service.

Good luck.

Mack.
