I have had long discussions about this download.net with all sorts of people.
If someone in here can shed any light on what is happening I would be very happy.
Some background to this story first - My site is called www.my-example.com
There is a site called www.their-example.com which is a shareware download site. I don't know how, but they can put my site name infront, (whether it's a sub domain or not I don't know), and it reads www.my-example.their-example.com
It has nothing to do with me at all, but it looks like it is one of my extensions.
I don't know if this is related or not, but I get 1 hit every few days from a whois database in the Seychelles. The whois search is for my site of course, and this download site was built the same day as the first whois search.
My server says don't worry, but surely it is possible now for anyone to use this method to use another site's reputation.
How about www.webmasterworld.their-example.com
I would think it was the real deal, wouldn't you?

I have noticed also its on everyones domain name.
You can all try it on your own web site
wwWebmasterWorldebsite.com-theirexample.net
only Verisign comes into my mind about the DNS issues as the site has nothing to do with our hosting as is the same with webmasterworld.
Definetly worth a big discussion and i expect it should be in the Domain names forum.

you can set the A records so that *every* third, fourth etc level domain gets pointed to the primary second level domain *no* *matter* *what* is put in front of the second level domain.
then, it's the task of the server hosting the second level domain to decide what has to happen : the generic site or a special part of the site.
I'm personally using a combination of specific third level and everything else.
