I don't know the correct terminology but:

I would like to make a lighthouse beam constantly go across the screen as the "background" of the webpage.

Is there a special effect to do this?
Is there a way to capture a movie of this and put it on a webpage?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

You can do this, but if it is in the background won't it be distracting to the user? Explain what you want a little more.

This is a typical Flash thing, but I believe you may be able to do it with DHTML.

I agree though, it would become very distracting, then annoying if anyone is going to be looking at a page for more than a few seconds.

Thanks for responding.

I would like a "subtle" motion of a light beam across the background of the <frame name="main">.

When the viewer clicks on a link on the <frame name="contents"> the link will cover the background.

So I don't think it would be distracting when it is covered over.

Thanks

if its done properly it may look quite nice.
its all going to depend on the speed and frequqncy of the beam - the slower the better.
im assuming that the beam circle will be changing shape slightly to give the appearance of depth(?), therefore flash is your man.
