ok... im the new kid named myron.. i built a decent well nice web site by trial and error. i thought i could drive traffic to my site by hammering up signs all over las vegas. and i kind of did! 1151 hits. now that im out of signs and want to go to the next step. what do i do..? ive paid for those search engine submit sites. results no hits.. what is indexing. do i really need banner exchanging. i mean what do i do next? its a shopping site. ive spent 600 dolars blasting fta's with no results...
so whats the next thing or things i need to do.

signed lost?

Try marketing to your target audience, rather than putting up ads hither and thither.

What's your site about? Who is most likely to benefit from the products/services/information you are offering? What are these people like to see and hear?

Answer those questions and you'll have yet another avenue to try. :) I have a very short article on my website, but I'll private msg you the link in case we're not allowed to post it in here. :)

A lot of people make the "if I build it they will come" mistake in webdesign.

I have had plenty of clients saying to me "just build me a website" and I have tried and failed in trying to explain to them that it just doesn't work that way.

Fair enough, if it a site just for show to existing clients or telephone clients then fair enough, but most want to sell products online without giving a second thought to marketing the site - I have since give up and say to them "fair enough, but don't say I didn't warn you."

The building of the site is the first step, then comes the fun part - MARKETING. You will get great self satisfaction knowing that you can turn your good efforts in building the site knowing you can get people there to appreciate what you have done, and in turn commit themselves to you and your site.

In another case, its not all about just marketing for search engines then leaving it to see what happens, it is an ongoing task to keep your current crop of customers happy and willing to trade with you again. This is where all positive thinking comes into plan.

If you can figure this then you are laughing =)

Keep researching and good luck ;)

Don't pay for submission services. Manually submit to search engines yourself.

Use search engines to find yet more directories that you can submit to too.

don't worry about search engines, they will find you and submitting to them won't get you there any faster.
now directories like yahoo are different, you have to submit to them.

Get a bunch of solid links from DMOZ, JoeAnt, GoGuides, Galaxy, Zeal (non-profit sites only), WebWorldIndex and location specific directories. If you're selling a product seek out links on topic specific directories and sites.
