Hi,
I am using a programme to check visitors to my site.
A lot of the recorded visitors come in the form of (AOL-EU-1), just as an example, where the individual visitors information is not given, this also applies to a lot of Broadband visits.
Is there any way of finding out who the visits are from in more detail.
Many thanks,
Bill.

Bill,

Ask your host to turn off reverse-DNS lookup in your logs. This will give you the raw remote IP address. If you wish, you can then do the reverse-DNS lookup yourself at a later time to get the hostname.

Thanks for your reply Jim,
I am not sure I quite understand this.
When I get the visitors information details from HitLens I will get this for most Broadband Ip numbers, or similar:

inetnum: 81.152.0.0 - 81.152.250.255
netname: BT-CENTRAL-PLUS
descr: IP pools
country: GB
admin-c: PC487-RIPE
tech-c: SR401-RIPE
status: ASSIGNED PA
remarks: Please send abuse notification to abuse@bt.net
mnt-by: BTNET-MNT
mnt-lower: BTNET-MNT
mnt-routes: BTNET-MNT
changed: preston.dialip@bt.com 20021113
source: RIPE

If I do a reverse delegation, both in RIPE, I get the same info.

My site is hosted by LYCOS, I don't know much about log files which is why I use Hitlens, are you telling me to tell LYCOS to turn off the reverse lookups.
Thanks again,
Bill.

Bill,

Well, you could ask them, but this would only affect your raw logs... I assumed from the title that you wanted the IP address, but I may have simply answered the wrong question. :o

Sorry Jim,
Maybe I am confusing the issue.
You are correct I do want the IP addresses, it is just that I am not sure how to access my log files on LYCOS there does not appear to be any, and as I say I want to get individual addresses from within returns like the one I posted, instead of it just coming up with AOL or whatever.
Anyway thanks for trying to help and best wishes for the holidays,
Bill.
