I've been looking at these new results. They seem to be very heavily orientated towards meta tags and the url itself.
Judging by the emphasis on the meta tags this seems a backwards step because:
a) Meta tags should be redundent nowadays
b) The sites displayed have spam meta tags piled to the rafters
Have MSN given up doing this properly already?
why?
>>>b) The sites displayed have spam meta tags piled to the rafters
not in sectors i've looked at, perhaps the sites you mention are up there for other reasons, they just happen to have heavy meta tags as well.

i couldn't disagree more, i launched a site last week and it has already been spidered and listed in msn search ... seems to me they are raising the stakes not lowering them.
i also like the results - people are complaining because they are diff to google, but what would be the point if they were the same? i think there are many good sites in many sectors, they can't all be top.

Uh, in the sector I watch the number 1 site for a competitive 12mil result query uses clean meta tags and does not have the query in or closely associated with the domain. The number 2 site does not use meta tags and is also is on a domain not associated with the query.
I wonder if the engine is broken, or if people who don't know how to optimize can't be bothered with taking the time to learn?
