Will Msn be powered by Yahoo before July?

Or will Inktomi?

I am confused... Altavista and Alltheweb are switching to new Yahoo! index... maybe with different algos... but what about Msn? Now is it still powered by Inktomi? Yet, Inktomi should die sooner or later as I understand...?

Brand wise, I would imagine Yahoo! Search is going for consitancy more than anything with user perception of their offering.

So imho, MSN Search will be powered by Yahoo! Search by July, since that would give Yahoo the biggest boost for their core brand.

I doubt you will see a single word about Yahoo anywhere on MSN search.

(At least) Until July, It will be Inktomi(not new Yahoo Search) on MSN. After July, maybe mixed combination or just continued with Inktomi.
I spoke with a person at MSN, and he said that (as far as he knows) MSN would not launch the MSN search yet.

He also said that in MSN year 2005 starts in July 2004 for accounting purpose.

So, when ballmer said 2005 for the new search, it is possible that he meant some time between july 2004 and july 2005.

I doubt they will have brand new search engine by this july. Their beta search engine is same as msn.com's only with minor layout difference for new paid listings(for overture and MSN's direct ppc).

Where is Inktomi getting its pages from now? Slurp is now feeding Yahoo, right?

Yahoo! Search Technology is made up of a best of breed hybrid solution from Inktomi, AltaVista and AlltheWeb.

Yahoo! Search Technology powers the following:

* the previous Inktomi distribution
* AltaVista
* Fast / AlltheWeb and previous distribution
* Yahoo!

However, from 20 years of watching MS - a slightly more accurate timescale could be that when ballmer said 2005 for the new search, it is possible that he actually meant some time between july 2004 and july 3005.

If I search the same keywords in Msn and Yahoo I get very different results. Is this due to a different algo only? Are you sure it's the same database?

The index is the same.

Both Yahoo! and MSN have been playing with / experimenting / tweaking (pick your term) with their relevancy algo's for the past few weeks.

I would expect to see it continue for a while.

That's where my problem is... For the last week, Yahoo has been showing over 1200 of my pages, while MSN only has 14. AltaVista and ATW show 15, and only 9 of those overlap the MSN results. Is it just a matter of waiting longer or is something else going on?

It looks to me like Microsoft has to eat whatever Yahoo decides to feed them, until such time that MS can launch their own engine. This won't happen for another 12 months, I suspect.

MS is like a prisoner-of-war until then, and Yahoo will feed them a minimum diet. Expect MS to be 30 to 60 days behind the latest that's available from Slurp.
MS probably cannot do anything about it, because the wording in the contract between Inktomi and MS couldn't anticipate such a bizarre situation.

I don't understand - what bizarre situation? Are you saying that MSN's contract with Ink ran out, and they won't renew it for a short term? I know MSN isn't happy about using Ink/Yahoo, but Yahoo should be happy to sell their results to anyone.

Yeah, MSN either has a subset of the Inktomi database, or it's adding new pages very slowly.

Why did MSN start using Inktomi results? It seems it wasn't too long ago that I saw them switch back FROM Inktomi over to some Looksmart results again for a while ... now they're back with inktomi again?
