I thought I'd try importing some of my updated campaigns from AdWords. I wasn't entirely surprised to find the Microsoft instructions for creating an AdWords report for importing didn't work as expected (or perhaps that should be *did* work as expected) but I then tried exporting the campaigns from AdWords editor and was delighted to find I could import the CSV files successfully into AdCenter. This is great, I thought, no more problems using the bulk upload feature!
Better take a look at the uploaded campaigns to check everything's OK. Hmmmm, all the ad groups show "draft" status. Maybe there's a delay while the system checks the keywords for relevancy. No problem, I'll go off to bed and check it again in the morning.
Up nice and early, let's check those campaigns. Hmmmm, still draft status for the ad groups, better look further into this. Came across a page in the help section stating that ad groups uploaded in bulk need to be activated manually to take them out of draft status. Now, I've uploaded over 1000 ad groups so I'm not going to do that but I can probably select them all by campaign and activate them in bulk that way, maybe not all in one go but better than one at a time. No, apparently you can't do that, it has to be one at a time. UNBELIEVABLE.
OK, let me try it with the first ad group and see how long it takes (just so I'm 100% sure that doing it per ad group will see me comfortably into retirement). Well, you can't activate the ad group on the first page, no, you have to click through five pages/steps until you get the chance to submit/activate it properly. And now, here's the best bit...IT WON'T LET ME ACTIVATE THE AD GROUP BECAUSE IT WAS UPLOADED YESTERDAY AND HAS A START DATE PRIOR TO TODAY'S DATE! AND TO MAKE IT EVEN BETTER, THERE'S NO OBVIOUS WAY TO CHANGE THE START DATE!
I'm sorry, I just had to get this off my chest. Maybe I'm missing something here (if so please tell me) and I will be sending a support request to see if someone can just activate the ad groups for me, but as things stand this has got to be one of the worst examples of any product implementation I've ever seen.
We have had a lot of feedback from our advertisers about the “draft” status that all of the adGroups come in at when Importing a Campaign. During our last update we implemented a new feature that allows for multiple submissions of the adGroups at once.
a. Select an imported campaign.
b. If you have not set a budget for your campaign, at the top of the Select an ad group page, click [Edit], type a campaign budget, and then click Save.
c. Select the check boxes next to the ad groups you want to submit, click Actions, and then click Submit ad group. (you can select the top box to select the current page)

Thanks for your message. Your colleague with whom I spoke on the phone gave me the same info and we were able to resolve the problem. However, I needed to delete and re-import all the campaigns due to the issue mentioned with the start date (seems like a strange kind of "gotcha" and very frustrating when you run into it). With regard to the ability to submit the adgroups in draft status I think part of the problem is the terminology. I had actually noticed the "submit" facility when I first imported the campaigns but assumed that my adgroups had already been "submitted" because they were visible. If the action had been described as "activate" or "activate draft adgroups" I probably would have tried it! The only other point I would make is that my expectation was that imported campaigns and adgroups would immediately be active (not in a draft state - I just noticed it almost by accident). Hope that feedback's of some use.
