iPhoto library management

Help! I tried some library file management and now I have a disaster.

I'm in way over my head. With 1000's of photos in my library, I wanted to create a brand new one and archive the old.

I opened the Photos folder and moved the "iPhoto Library" folder out and renamed it. Then I started iPhoto and it was looking for a Library folder, so I told it to make a new one, which it did, calling it "iPhoto Library".

When I wanted to restore the old library, I went to the Pictures folder and swapped the "iPhoto Library" folders, and restarted iPhoto but it asked me for a Library folder.

After repeated attempts with many variations to find my original library folder, I found that I now have quite a few of them, and none will open in iPhoto.

Further checking down the file ladder revealed that my photos are all there, but now somehow detached from their original Library folder.

I tried to import them, but I can select only 1 jpeg file at a time.

Can someone out there tell me how to "put Humpty back together again"?

There's probably a much more clever way to do this, but you might try burning the directory containing your photos to a CD or DVD, and then reinserting the disk and see if iPhoto will import from the disk en masse.
