Is SVG ready for prime time?

And is there a simple Mac SVG editor?

I have a couple pages that have very simple diagrams done as ASCII art -- just boxes and lines, with a few words of text here and there.

Do people feel that the SVG (scalable vector graphics) format is readable by the average surfer today, or is it still the domain of geeks with special plug-ins? Is there a very simple Mac SVG editor available? I'm sure things like Adobe Illustrator can work with SVG, but I was wondering if there is anything simple/free for just an elementary diagram or two.

There is still very little in the way of SVG support in major browsers - you can get a plugin from Adobe as well as special versions of Firefox with SVG included, but that's about the limit.

For web graphics, you're still pretty much limited to JPG, GIF and PNG.

The nightly builds of Safari now have built in SVG compatibility, so you can expect to see it as a standard in the next release.

So this gives accessibility in Safari and Firefox.... but may be another 10-15 years before Internet Explorer catches up....

Fx 1.5 has some support for SVG [developer.mozilla.org], but it's not finished yet.
