Mighty Mouse - review

I've just got my hands on the 'Mighty Mouse' (ref: [webmasterworld.com...] and taken it for a quick spin round the 'net.

Comments:

  • nice packaging, comes with a CD and instruction manual;
  • right-click needs to be enabled in Preferences (defaults to left);

    I'm having no problem right-clicking, but I can see how it would be difficult if your usual style is to grab a hold of your mouse like it was going to run off (ie. Windows-user-style). The 'correct' position seems to be to place your thumb and ring-finger on the 'squeeze' buttons, and use the index- and middle-fingers for clicking. The index-finger must be lifted before you can get a right-click.

  • the scroll-ball works great for up/down, not-so-great for left/right (but why would you need to anyway), and not at all for 'diagonal' or 'circular' motion. It makes a sound like winding up a wrist-watch. Scrolling works in: frames, iframes, form elements and 'overflow: auto' content;
  • a click on the scroll-ball (not just pressing down) triggers Dashboard (on/off) by default;
  • a click or squeeze on either of the side-buttons triggers Exposé (show all windows), but the action is a bit awkward and I find it easier just to run to a 'hot corner' instead;
  • the button actions can be changed through Preferences - although assigning right-click to the left button doesn't seem to work.

    ;)

    dcrombie,

    Great input!

    I have a question. How about the overall 'feel' of the mouse? I mean is the weight and movement about the same as the regular Apple mouse? Or does it have a totally different feel? The mouse in the photos online looks pretty close to the original Apple mouse is why I ask. Mainly out of curiousity.

    It's a bit lighter and 'nippier' than the regular (clear) Apple mouse.

    It's *considerably* lighter than Apple's wireless mouse - altogether easier on a large monitor!
