Well Apple finally got the hint that Mac users want more buttons. [apple.com ]

"Meet the mouse that reinvented the wheel. The scroll wheel, that is. At $49, Mighty Mouse features the revolutionary Scroll Ball that lets you move anywhere inside a document, without lifting a finger. And with touch-sensitive technology concealed under the seamless top shell, you get the programability of a four-button mouse in a single-button design. Click, roll, squeeze and scroll. This mouse just aced the maze."

Appleinsider article [appleinsider.com ]

Now if they would just make it wireless.

its actually just a single button mouse with sensors for the "buttons"... and the scroll ball isn't a regular track ball or scroll ball.. it is kinda like the scroll wheel on an iPod from what I hear.

Leave it to Apple to take a very old technology (multi-button mouses), and re-introduce it in an innovative way... lol

Has anyone used it yet? This mouse wasn't available at the Compusa store in my area.

You should read a post over at the ThinkMac Blog...

Mighty mouse not so mighty [thinkmac.co.uk]

Maybe Apple has gone a little too far using their *touch sensitive* technology in products. I don't know about everyone else but I usually rest my fingers on the mouse when I'm using it. Also it's too bad that there was no bluetooth version released after they encouraged using their wireless keyword and mice.

I'm waiting for mine to arrive this week so I'll see for myself how 'sensitive' it is.

In the meantime I've been reading a lot of mixed reviews on the Mighty Mouse, but this one [ptech.wsj.com] has to be the dumbest:

Microsoft has also brought out a new mouse in the past few weeks, the Wireless Optical Mouse 5000. It isn't as slick-looking as Apple's new entry, but it's better, in my view. The Microsoft mouse has an innovation: It allows you to instantly magnify any portion of your screen without zooming into the whole display

The 'mouse' zooms a portion of your screen?!?

Both of these new mice are primarily designed to work with each company's own computing platform. Each will also work on the other's platform, although some special features, like the Microsoft magnifier, don't carry over.

Well, duh!

edit and this one [arstechnica.com] has to be the best!

;)

hah, funny article there Dr.

Honestly, I love my Mac as much as the next guy, but for pete's sake, just go get a damn Kensington or something. Leave the mac mice to the people who put decorative magnets all over their tower and then wonder why their hard drive craps out.

Ok, so that doesn't actually work. But they don't know that.

Well I'm a little excited to have a touch sensitive mouse. After a 13-14 hour day I fell like I experience a little discomfort. (mouse is still not availible locally)

Just got to use a friends new Mighty Mouse, my random reactions:

The squeeze side buttons should be a little easier to 'click.' Having that be the Exposé F9 seems 'the way things out to be' already.

Despite other claims, you can scroll diagonally it's just extraordinarily difficult because each diagonal scroll 'zone' is only maybe 2° or 3°, so it's a small, small target to hit. After two or three hours of practice (why should I need to practice?) I can scroll diagonally about 80% of the time on the first try. They should have made that easier.

I sat down to use it and didn't even realize it was the new mouse. The scroll ball is the only thing that gives it away and it's a subtle feel. Quite nice, actually. Clicking the scroll ball for Dashboard seems like 'the way things ought to be' already and I've programmed my Kensington scroll wheel click to do so.

Never realized it, but I already lift my index finger when I right-click. I think more people do this than realize after watching other people try it out. I also lift my middle finger when I left-click. When not clicking, both fingers rest on the mouse and the Mighty Mouse is okay with this.

All in all, a very nice mouse -- couple flaws but Apple can fix those on the next rev if they are common problems to other users. I like my Kensington a little more, but might not have ever bothered to buy it if the Mighty Mouse was standard with new macs.
