Steve Jobs allegedly to confim today

Apple CEO Steve Jobs is expected to announce Monday morning that Apple will discontinue using microprocessor chips made by IBM in favor of Intel (INTC) chips, according to CNET Networks's News.com and The Wall Street Journal.

June 6, 2005—At its Worldwide Developer Conference today, Apple® announced plans to deliver models of its Macintosh® computers using Intel® microprocessors by this time next year, and to transition all of its Macs to using Intel microprocessors by the end of 2007. Apple previewed a version of its critically acclaimed operating system, Mac OS® X Tiger, running on an Intel-based Mac® to the over 3,800 developers attending CEO Steve Jobs’ keynote address...

“Our goal is to provide our customers with the best personal computers in the world, and looking ahead Intel has the strongest processor roadmap by far,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “It’s been ten years since our transition to the PowerPC, and we think Intel’s technology will help us create the best personal computers for the next ten years.”

Also from the above press release, Microsoft confirm that there will be an Intel version of Office for OSX.

It's because 95% of WebmasterWorld users don't touch Macintosh computers! They all love cheapo computers that get flooded with viruses and spyware.

I imagine this will be big news in Web development circles when the machines actually come out. Right now it's interesting to application developers, etc., but still vaporware to web professionals.

PC-oriented web professionals should perk up when they can buy a machine that will let them run Windows normally, test sites in Mac browsers, and run a Unix Apache server.

This all means we will have macs with a BIOS *shudder*. I was really a bit angry when I heard the news, seeing how apple likes to push on new stuff and not bother that much anymore about older stuff (like older releases of Mac OS X) I am really worried that newer programs won't run anymore on my brand new PPC iBook in the not so distant future.

I would be surprised if Mac OS X releases after "Leopard" will still run on PPC.

It's real clear from the keynote that the developers work load for making universal binaries that run on the Intel and PowerPC chipsets is extraordinarily light. So, I have no concerns that new programs will continue to function on the millions of PowerPC Macs out there.
