One of the things that I really have never liked when using a mac is the one button mouse - coming from a linux system where three buttons and a function for each is the norm, I just find that having to hold down a key and click with the mouse means that I can't work whilest sipping my coffee.

But OSX is related to BSD - is it possible to add a three button mouse to operate in the same way as my linux system?

Left button default click, highlight text, middle button paste, right button options.

Yep, buy one and plug it in. In all likelihood, it will work "out of the box" without needing to install the software that comes with it.

To customize the button behaviors, you'll probably have to install the mfg's software, or a third-party driver, and for more buttons you need driver software over and above what comes with the Mac.

I use a Logitech 5-button-with-scrollwheel mouse, and I program its buttons using USBOverdrive, because I prefer the functionality in that over the software Logitech provides.

Can't really add much to what sonjay said... Just that I'm using the MS Intellimouse, and it works flawlessly

Thanks - that's good news - another thing to tick off of the "why I can't switch yet list" it's getting smaller :)

I think I'm using the same mouse sonjay described, the logitech MX500. The logitech software is a waste of time -- for the custom functions per app or systemwide, USBoverdrive is perfect and it runs almost any USB input device.

If you get a mac mini you don't even have to feel bad about throwing the one button mouse in a closet. :)
