Converting FrontPage to Dreamweaver on a MAC

how to do this?

I am very familiar with Dreamweaver as I have used it to build over 5 different websites. However, a friend of mine asked me to redo her website that was created with Microsoft FrontPage. I cannot import this to Dreamweaver because I do not have the files on my computer, and I cannot download FrontPage onto my computer because I have a MAC. If I am redoing her website completely, can't I just use her FTP information to gain access to the website? Please help me if you have any suggestions. Thanks.

I recently imported a FrontPage site and worked on it in Dreamweaver MX without any problems at all...

Yes, you can use ftp to download the entire site to your computer. You'll need her ftp login and password.

You can define the site in DW, then just use DW to "get" the entire site. Or you can use any old ftp program to download all the files, and then define the site in DW.

Be aware, though: If the site uses any FP extensions (webbot things) editing it in Dreamweaver will almost certainly break the FP extensions. If you're totally re-doing the site, you'll want to do away with any FP extensions and use standard protocols instead.

Oh, and after you download all the site files, make sure you dupe the entire site folder to have as a backup before you start messing with it.

Thanks for the responses. However, have tried using the ftp info provided by my friend. Do you think that she has incorrect information? Does anyone know exactly where you go in FrontPage to find the ftp information because I am totally unfamiliar with this program. Could there be other reasons why the ftp login & password are not working in Dreamweaver? Please help. Thanks!

Probably the ftp login and password are incorrect. You can verify that it's not a Dreamweaver issue (or that it IS) by using some other stand-alone ftp program and attempting to log in.

I like FileZilla on the PC and Transmit on the Mac, but any old ftp program would do.

If you can get in with that, then it's a Dreamweaver issue. If not, then it's probably incorrect login info.

You might have your friend contact her host and have them re-send the e-mail with the site login info, then have her forward that to you.

I finally got it! The server that was being used for the url was so old that it didn't accept dreamweaver (ftp upload). I was able to find a new server. Thank you all for your help in narrowing down my problem!
