Hi, im wondering if its a good idea to use a powerbook for software develpoement at uni? Im about to use the following programs for the 2 semesters...

- Eiffel Studio
- Sybase
- JBuilder
- Oracle 9i
- PHP stuff

Or should i stick with a PC.

btw there might be a chance that .net stuff that has to be learnt, will virtual pc be usefull in a ny way or is it too laggy to compile the code?

Thanks

As a "Mac Person" of course my answer is that all things Mac are good.

It sounds like you need to do Java, PHP and database stuff. I know they have many databases (MySQL, PostGreSQL, Oracle) for OSX of course great PHP and Java tools.

Sybase and .Net probably not.

Virtual PC is great for testing, running some things in but you don't want to spend hours at a time in there.

I've heard from recent grads that Unix experience is a very helpful plus entering the technical job market. Since a Unix workstation comes free inside every Mac, I'd say a Mac would be a good investment.

Don't go crazy though, keep your PC handy.

Most important, I wouldn't suggest buying anything without talking with appropriate UNI faculty.
