Front Page for Mac?

My niece is taking a class in college that requires them to use Front Page. The school has a computer lab with FP on the machines, but she's like her aunt and does her best work late at night when the lab is long shut down. So she's asked for her own copy of Front Page.

Her computer is a G4. What's the most recent version of Front Page for the Mac, how available is it, and roughly what might I expect to pay for it?

I've searched online and FP 1.0 for Mac seems to be the most prevalent version, but I've seen some references to a 1.1, although I haven't seen anywhere to buy it. If 1.0 is outdated, I don't want to get it just because it's most available, but if 1.1 is out there, it's shy.

Any help is greatly appreciated - this is something on her holiday wish list. Thanks for any input.

There is no Frontpage for the Mac, at least not for OS X. That's a good thing actually because Frontpage is a horrible program.

Also, there aren't many situations where you HAVE to use Frontpage for anything. If the class is just writing html or web design or something like that, you can use any editor you want, save an html file, and import that into Frontpage.

FP2003 is actually a good program, IMO. Granted, previous versions had code-bloat, no FTP, and other problems/shortfalls, though. I use Dreamweaver, FP, and HTML, so am not playing favorites here, just going by what my niece has asked for.

The class in question isn't a web authoring class. I get the impression that it's more of a situation where the instructor has put something up on the school's intranet, and the students have to go in and update it, like the dates when they've completed stages of a project or something along that line.

If the page is built with an older version of FP, then FP or HTML are probably the only two ways to safely edit the page. My niece is computer savvy but doesn't happen to do websites, so doesn't know HTML. So it looks like her only two options are the school's computer lab whenever she can get there and get a seat, or putting compatible software on her machine.

You're going to find that most Mac users use BBEdit, and write their code manually. If there is a GUI for creating HTML pages with OS 9 or OS X, I've never heard of it.

I realize that the problems with Frontpage have been addressed, but I still feel like I have to have a Doctorate in Cryptography just to decypher the endless, needless code that even FP2003 puts in. Also I've found that about 50% of the JavaScripts I write get demolished once imported into FP.

Dreamweaver is available for the Mac, and it's a far better program than FP.

Incidentally, I'd be worried about the quality of what is being taught at that school if they're using FrontPage. Dreamweaver is the industry standard as far as WYSIWYG HTML editing software is concerned.

No offense to FrontPage users intended, just stating the fact.

Depends on which side of the fence you are on. If you are working in a Windows centric environment, then FrontPage would be the best overall tool for the job. Corporate Intranets that are running all the latest MS applications will most likely be using FrontPage or Visual InterDev [msdn.microsoft.com].

Since FrontPage is no longer available for the Mac (1.0 was the last official release), you will need to use DW or other editors mentioned in this thread. You could always use FP 1.0 for the Mac but it won't have all the latest features unless there is someone out there writing unofficial updates for 1.0.

Dreamweaver? GoLive? Most people have heard of at least one of those two. ;) There are other lesser-known programs as well...

Unfortunately, I'm not sure which, if any, will integrate well enough with FP to be useful in this situation.

Your niece can install Virtual PC and run the most current version of Front Page for Windows that way. For a G4, she can pick up a copy of virtual PC 6 for less than the cost of the new VPC 7 without any real problems.
[apple.com...]

Then she'll have Windows for any other required tasks that don't have a mac equivalent. :)
