Gidday all, have a question that may seem rather redundant but here goes. Im wondering if it is possible to view the PC display (desktop) on a Mac machine that has been networked?

At the mo I have a Mac and PC connected to the one monitor and am thinking about getting a new imac G5 and would like to have just the iMac display running.

I would also like to run MSN Messenger (vid-chat) on the PC but view it on the iMac. Basically my display has grown tooooo big.

Possible?

Regards, Wayne.

Hi,

I'm not a 100% sure of your question, but from what I understand, you seem to be looking for

TightVNC on the PC [tightvnc.com...]

and

Chicken of the VNC on the Mac [sourceforge.net...]

Are you running the Mac and the PC off the same monitor? Then a KVM (Keyboard/Video/Mouse) switch might work for you.

Or you could set up the Remote Desktop Connection client on the Mac, and use that to access the PC. I do that quite frequently to work on my desktop PC from elsewhere in the house with my Powerbook. Response time has a bit of a lag to it, but it's not a huge drawback.

Oh, and welcome to WebmasterWorld!

To Photon : "Or you could set up the Remote Desktop Connection client on the Mac, and use that to access the PC" by doing this do you see the PC desltop as if you were viewing it on an independant monitor? Or is it just a file sharing icon?

To Blakmonk : Thanx for the direct to the VCN clients. The Chicken VCN is for Cocoa but can I view the PC desktop?

Just to review what I want to do etc. Now I have an iBook and PC running to the same crt monitor with a monitor switch. I want to buy one of those way cool iMac G5s. I want to use the iMac to connect to-view desktop of-use MSN Messanger vidchat of my PC. Thus, the iMac would also act as a monitor for the PC.

With the Remote Desktop Connection [microsoft.com] you're seeing the actual PC desktop. You can also share drives and printers.

One caveat I forgot to mention: the PC has to be runnig XP Pro (XP Home won't act as a server).
