Simple image editor for Mac classic OS

Are there any good free ones?

I've got a client who are a non-profit with a small/non-existent IT budget. They are equipped with a mixture of Macs, ranging from a couple of nice machines with OS9, and others with older hardware/software. They are a 100% Mac network - not a PC in the building.

They need a simple image editor for editing digital photos - they don't need the power of Photoshop, they only need to do a bit of image resizing and cropping, maybe the odd retouch if they're brave.

Are there any good, preferably free, simple photo editing programs available for pre-OSX Macs?

Thanks for your suggestions!

Photoshop Elements is pretty cheap compared to their pro version... but it's still commercial. Around $99 last I heard.

Graphic Converter is shareware, but it's not very user friendly. I think it's $29 or so. It doesn't require registration, but the startup screen starts in with the delay/timer thing after 30 days.

Can't think of any free ones offhand, but I know scanners often come with bundled photo editing software. A usb scanner can be had for well under $100, and by searching somewhere like MacMall, they could see what bundled software is included with each.

Another option is to check ebay for 'old' versions of Photoshop... a copy of version of 5 or 6 should be pretty dirt cheap these days.

Hmm. Didn't OS 9 come with one of the first versions of iPhoto? I never use iPhoto that much (am already addicted to Photoshop), but I think it does very simple image editing.

Does Photoshop Elements 2 work in OS 9? I know that the first version does, but I am unsure about version 2.

Picking up old copies of Photoshop LE on eBay would also be a good choice. They'll run on old Macs just fine. (Depending on how old you want to go—many of the old pre-G3 PowerMacs will run Photoshop LE.)

I'm not sure if older versions of Photoshop will be very cheap. They usually go for a hundred at least, because people use them as a way to upgrade to the latest version of Photoshop. I ought to know, that's how I afforded my copy of Photoshop. ;-)

I'm almost positive iPhoto is OSX only... but looking for Photoshop LE on ebay (or Photoshop Elements, the newer limited version of PS) is a good idea. It would definitely be cheaper than a full 'pro' version.

bcolflesh, BME looks just perfect, and freeware too! As I said, it will only be used for reducing the photos, so Photoshop would be rather overkill. Downloaded, and I now have a ".hqx" file.

Now I've just got to find out how to install the thing (I've got absolutely no experience of these fancy Mac things!)

Start out by double (or right) clicking on it. Depending on how many buttons your mouse has. ;)
