Cheapest Mac that will run OSX

Subject pretty much says it. Apologies if this comes up every week, since I don't read here very often - no scolding please ;-)

Basically, after years of having access to top-end Macs, I don't have access to any Macs at all. That makes it impossible to test Safari and IE for Mac (yeah, I know about Dan Vine's site, which is great, but not if you are debugging CSS and want to refresh 15x/hr).

So I'm looking for the cheapest/lowest end Mac that will handle let me run Safari and IE. Used is fine (cheaper rather than more expensive) but laptop would be best (smaller rather than bigger).

So if I were going to start cruising E-Bay for a cheap Mac, what should my bottom end be?

BTW, I don't care if it's fast, nice or anything. As long as I can see how pages render on a Mac.

Is it imperative to get a laptop?

I just dont trust used ones on ebay.

If you can live with a desktop, get a G4, for 400 $

You can look for a factory refurbished G4 iBook at the Apple.com store site. Sometimes they have good deals.

the eMacs are a very good deal too.

either way I would look into those Apple refurbished ones since they come with a warranty.

How about the G3 iMac? It will run OSX if you have enough RAM installed. It's cheap and comes with it's own monitor. I've installed OS 10.2(Jaguar) onto a 400Mhz iMac with 128Megs of RAM. Sure it won't be the snappiest machine but it will browse the web without a hitch. I would suggest going to 256Megs of RAM if you go this route.

Laptop request was just to make efficient use of limited space. I think jezra's old iMac suggestion would be a good compromise for me. Space efficient and cheap. Perfect!
