Apple has joined Fast Identity Online Alliance (FIDO), the open industry association with the aim strengthening authentication without using passwords.

FIDO members also include Amazon, Facebook, Google, Mastercard, Microsoft, PayPal, Visa, and many other businesses.

Clearly, with Apple joining there will be more support for password-free authentication from the company.

The FIDO is a nice initiative, but too little too late IMO, and totally tech-focussed.

I remember the days I only had to remember "qwer1234" to access all digitally secure parts of my life. Passwords are already getting extinct in my daily life, but not because of the FIDO.

Now I have an app on my phone which scans QR codes for government sites, a smartcard with passcode for more secure government sites, one bank using their own app for authentication, another bank using SMS codes, a code generator card for my AWS console, Google Authenticator for some sites, several stored PKI certificates with passcodes for other sites and I am sure I forgot at least half a dozen other non-password authentication systems I use nowadays.
